Jalie 2908: The Jean Gene Jeans

Jeans. Wardrobe staple. And I had none. Seriously, not a single pair of plain old blue jeans. Have I mentioned my tendency to avoid sewing wardrobe basics?
Jalie 2908 to the rescue. For this version, I straightened the legs just above the knee to give more of a slim, boot cut.
Of course, just because it's a wardrobe staple, it needn't be uninspired...
I love a creative back pocket design. In this case, I'm inspired by  the graceful double helix of deoxyribonucelic acid. At first, I planned to indicate the base pairs with simple silver studs, but a few red rhinestones had made their way into the bag of studs, so I decided my DNA needed a point mutation. I know. Lettin' my nerd flag fly high with this one...
It just looks like abstract swirls unless you get close. But I know... And so do you.
The insides got some quirky mushrooms. I also used crystal rivets at the pocket corners. They tie in nicely to the pocket design. And I love bling.
From the side, I think I still need to tweak the fit in back, just a tiny bit. They are very comfortable though.
The fabric is a Theory denim from Mood. It's a very nice weight and stretch for jeans. I know I'll wear these a ton. I've got a plan to build my Grunge Sew-along look around them, but today I paired them with a casual Stretch & Sew top

  1. Oh, they are great! Especially the DNA with point mutation! Now I want to copy that---although other science designs could also be awesome. Like organic chem diagrams... #nerdgasm

  6. Your pants are fabulous! I love the back pocket design too! The reasoning behind the design is so "you," and that is what makes sewing fun!

  8. I love them to pieces. Too bad you can just duplicate and enlarge them copier style. :)

  12. I am so with you on the avoiding sewing the basics! I have to really force myself to make them for myself.

I love that you personalized your jeans - gotta love subtly geeky nods! It's like being part of a secret club, hehe. And the mushrooms! Those just make me smile! =)

  13. Those look great! It looks like you had lots of fun sewing them, even though they are "basics." They certainly don't look basic to me!

SO excited to have finally figured out rss feeds so your blog posts show up in my email. Seriously. Excited. Now onto your awesome jeans:

I LOVE THEM. Holy cow do I love them. I saw the pattern and was tempted with my first Jalie pattern purchase recently. You are a talented lady!

  15. To add to the nerdiness:
The mushrooms on your waistband form a fairy ring!
Mushrooms (the fruiting bodies of fungi) form in rings above the ground, which is connected to the massive unground fungi network. :)

  16. I love the Jalie Jean pattern. Your pocket detail is to die for as in the inside of the waist band. Enjoy :)

  17. Nice outfit and great work on the jeans. When I buy jeans I usually try on a billion different pairs, so I haven't dared make a pair yet in case I don't like them at the end! The Jalie pattern seems a good style though judging by your jeans

  23. I like the straight waistband, BUT I made the higher rise and I have a small waist compared to my hip. When I made the low rise version, I did have to contour the waistband a bit to fit my hip curve. I always sew stretch jeans so that they are a tiny bit snug, since they do stretch, as you mentioned. I like them to start out feeling like they are compressing just a little. Then when they stretch out, they don't bag.

  28. I'm gonna tackle the Thurlows first, then Jalie jeans (love the genes) with the slimmer bootcut, which is my favorite because its ALMOST straight looking on my very pronounced calves.
