2-in-1 Sew-A-Long: Dreaming...

I know I'm deep in the wedding dress sewing, but I'm daydreaming of my next project.
I won't be able to sew a long with the group, but I will need a dress of my own for the wedding, and I love the pattern that Sunni picked for the SAL.
I don't know how I missed this one when it came out. It has great lines! I'm planning to do the wrap version. I love a good wrap dress. I'm thinking for the fabric that I want something soft and draping. I rummaged through the stash and pulled out these four.
The three on the right are billed as charmeuse (although the solid has a more matte finish that your garden variety charmeuse), and the ikat on the left is a peachskin. I like them all for different reasons...
The ikat peachskin is fun and bright. It also happens to mirror the bride's wedding colors of purple and teal. But, it's got a somewhat more casual vibe than the others. And I'm afraid I'll look blurry in all of the pictures.
I love the vibrant colors and abstract-ish print of the floral. But the print is a pretty large scale, and I'm afraid it will get lost in the details of the gathered, wrap bodice and back yoke. I'm also not sure I have quite enough yardage, particularly since I know I'm going to have to lengthen the skirt.
This animal print wasn't even on my radar, until I saw Sunni's wrap dress inspiration post. The last dress is the same color scheme in a similar animal print! And I love it!! But is it too much for a wedding?
Finally we have the solid. I'm not very good about sewing solids, but I wear them a lot, so I know this would be a useful dress in my wardrobe. The fabric is a lovely color, with a very subtle sheen. But it isn't quite as much fun as the prints.

What do you think? Which one is your favorite, and why? Dish, ladies! Help me daydream!

  1. Ooo, tricky! I love the abstract floral---but failing that, the solid would be lovely, too.

  2. I am crushing on the animal print, but I cannot offer much advise to wedding etiquette (I've never been to one, strange I know). I'm sure whichever you pick will be wonderful!

  3. I like the floral one best, with the animal print a close second. Animal print wouldn't seem very traditional wedding-y, but the one you have isn't the traditional animal print colors, so you could probably get away with it.

  4. I love the purple and teal ikat...because I like those colors.:) Any of the fabrics would suit you well but for some reason I keep coming back to the animal print.

  5. I saw the choices over on the flickr group and thought to myself that you should go with the floral. Now I see it over here, I still think the floral will be a great choice! My second choice would be the solid.

  8. I think the purple or the ikat would both look really nice on you.

  9. I'd avoid the brides colours unless you need to stand up for her. Why not go for the solid, and trim with the abstract floral? Or use the abstract floral and supplement with a co-ordinating solid to get your yardage? You can make All sorts of accessories to match then (shrug, hand-bag, small girl dress, waistcoats fans dickie bows for the boys etc etc).

  11. FWIW: The order of preference: "Animal" print 1st (altho' termed "animal" the colors also suggest not due to the red & these days people aren't so "stuffy" about what's worn at a wedding); 2nd purple ikat (I just like it) 3rd floral (so-so about that) 4th the solid (just not jazzed about the color - looks great on some people). I like the pattern - great dress! The Goose Mother

  12. Probably showing my age. I would pick the solid. But love the floral print.

  13. The solid would be a nice choice, but I love the abstract floral. Large prints actually have a way of working out well, even when you think the details will be lost. As for not having enough fabric, if you need to add length, you can always add a border to the bottom of the skirt, and echo it by trimming the edges of the bodice with the same fabric (Maybe the same shade of blue as the bride's sash?). I think the blue print and the animal print are too casual for a wedding. Can't wait to see what you do!

  15. I vote floral too - I think the animal print is too "cougar" for a wedding. And what is an ikat?? I like the solid next. Side note: my BIL got married in New Orleans at 7pm, and the colors were black and white. A saleslady at a fancy dress shop steered me to a beautiful full length black silk strapless column dress - it was gorgeous! Before the wedding started, some friends of the bride walked past me and said, "Oh, the bridesmaids dresses are pretty.". Sarah gave you some good advice!

  16. I love the solid, but that probably has a lot to do with the color. My second vote is for the floral print--since it's kind of abstract-y, I don't think it would matter if the print got broken up by the details. I look forward to seeing what you pick :)

  17. I pick the ikat for sure. My 2nd choice would be the solid, since that's more classic. But seriously, 17 hands in the air for the ikat!

  18. I like the solid, but my second choice would be the floral. Hmmm...now that I'm thinking on it a bit more the floral seems more "you".
