Sewing Magazines

I just got an offer in the mail for a free year of Sew News magazine, and after reading a few online reviews, I'm sort of considering it.
As far as sewing magazines go, I only subscribe to Threads and Ottobre (kids only). I let my BurdaStyle subscription lapse in May, since I hadn't sewn from it in about a year and they hiked up the price while making the patterns more difficult to trace. I'm kind of missing it though, if only for the inspiration and have been considering renewing when this offer showed up. So, dear readers, tell me - what do you think of Sew News? Do you subscribe? And, what sewing magazines are always on your nightstand?

I don't subscribe to any magazine, but I imagine sew news is at least valuable enough to be worth "free".

I used to read Threads, but realized that I wasn't using much of what was in it, and it's quite expensive. I find myself more likely to use a pattern/technique from a quilt magazine than a sewing one. For sewing, I just prefer to go crazy at 99c pattern sales :)

I love Threads despite its ups and downs; I find it more consistent that the other sewing magazines. I quit Burdastyle after about 5 years and only miss the fashion aspect, not the pattern tracing. I subscribed to Sew News years ago but gave it up when it went very crafty and home dec. I look at it while waiting on line at JoAnns but seldom want to buy it. I tried the Australian Stitches but it was so expensive for little content, lots of ads and promos. Personally, I'd rather get patterns, like the new Australian Style Arc or Knip Mode issue from Holland. And I'm heading out for one of those Butterick $.99 to see if the bust cup patterns for summer are in stock.

I have bought a few issues in the past but decided I didn't want to keep spending the money on it each month. I got a very similar card for Sew News. It was buy a 1 year subscription for $12.00 get 1 year free. I did it! I may or may not find it useful, but I figured at a $.50 an issue why not?

I got the same offer in the mail and after considering it, I decided not to subscribe. The reason I didn't is because even though you get one year free, in order to get that you have to pay for one year and then you get it for two. I don't know this magazine, so I thought i'd check it out before I pay for a year and then not like it. I get Sew Beautiful. That's my only one.

I think Sew News is very basic with a new beginner sewist slant. I'm not sure you would gain much from subscribing to it...but that's just MHO.

I used to get Sew News, but they changed editors, looking to draw a younger audience, and the magazine turned very crafty. I quit taking it and don't even look at it in the store anymore. Vogue pattern magazine very often has interesting and useful articles. I'd rather stick to buying books and patterns.

I read Vogue patterns and Threads from the library. If I subscribed to Vogue patterns, I think I'd be buying patterns constantly. Reading at the library if something looks interesting or useful, I'll mark it down for later.

I let my Burda lapse too. I need to work on making up what I want from there and selling the issues I won't use before I subscribe again.

I sub-ed to Sew News for years, but gave it up several years ago when it got so crafty. For that matter, I let my sub to Threads expire and only buy the ones I really want. Also let Burda go by the wayside 6 months ago. So, right now, I don't sub to any magazines. So far I haven't really regretted it.

Being a novice I like Sew News.....I also subscribe to Burdastyle not a fan of tracing the patterns though. We have a limited selection here but I try to get Sew Stylish on the news stand when I can. I am thinking of subscribing to Patrones....

I buy Threads if there is enough in the magazine to interest me, but I feel like I have "outgrown" Sew News. I also get Ottobre (Woman & kids), Sew Beautiful, and occasionally purchase Australian Smocking, La Mia Boutique, Burda, and Knipmode.

Well I am sure I'll buy Otto long after any of the kids will fit into the clothes. Not really sure why. Maybe collecting for future grandchildren? I get threads but it's a long story and it's free so I can't complain. Not usually anything of interest in it for me. The other mags are too hit and miss. If it is a free subscription go for it. It'll be worth the few great unexpected tips you get! It beats the recent mags that my husband got for free from some old airline miles... Some o.k., Shape, Outdoor Living but, I kid you not... teen vogue. I almost strangled him. Needless to say Luca will not lay eyes on that piece of sh!t. I've already thrown 3 issues into the recycling bin from the mailbox.

I got Sew News from the library once - my main impression was that Threads' quality was better. I don't subscribe to any sewing how-to mags since their tone tends to bug me, but every once in a while I do find a good tip or idea.

I got Sew News many years as a gift subscription first from my mom and then my mother-in-law. A couple years ago they dropped back to 6 issues/year instead of monthly, so the offer would actually be $1/issue which isn't bad. They have had some good basic articles on fitting and sewing techniques. That said, I prefer Threads and decided to keep the Threads subscription and let my Sew News lapse as I didn't really get that much out of it anymore. After subscribing for so long I was seeing a lot of stuff recycled, but to be fair how many different articles can you write on inserting zippers for example?
