Arrived, and still itching...

to sew, that is. I've been keeping up with all your blogs on my phone, so not much commenting. Sorry! I'll get back into my usual swing now!

We are here in Utah, and wow is this place beautiful!! Everywhere you go there are mountains on the horizon. It's horribly distracting when I drive.
Our house
The drive was long and painful. Every time we hit a bump, I cringed. Janome was back there!! I did manage to prep up several projects to bring with me, but neglected to include in my calculations the need for a table on which to put the machine. D'oh. As a result, I still haven't sewn a stitch. It's making me a little crazy and I may need to improvise something soon.
My sewing space
Once our stuff gets here there will be more to show, but this is my own little corner. In our last house, I shared a very small space with the office, but here I have a much larger room all to myself! I can't wait to get it all set up! So, for those of you with your own space (or those who have dreams of one!), what are your priorities for your studio? A sturdy cutting table? Big ironing surface? Lots of room for your machines?

How nice to have your own room to sew. I'm sure you'll come up with a solution for that missing table in no time.
What I would want for my sewing room (and what is lacking horribly) are some great storage-units or shelves. I think a well organised space inspires and motivates you even more to create beautiful things.

What a cute new house! It looks like a fairy cottage with the curved roofline. Enjoy your new sewing space, I am jealous! :-)

I am so excited for your new sewing space! I can't wait to see what you do with it. Since I now have my own room too the thing I wish I had the most is a matching organizational units for all my tools, felt, scrapbooking, notions, etc. I also want a pegboard on the wall, like in a garage, to hang scissors, rulers and things that I need most often. That was actually my husbands idea!

I agree with Karin...it's a cute house! I love SLC (have been there 4 times). You should hook up with kkkkaty from PR. I met her in March & she's really lovely. She'll show you the only fabric store in SLC!

Awesome house! My priority when I moved into our new house was claiming a big ole table that the previous owner left in the laundry room. I use it as my cutting table and let me tell ya, I love it so much! Much less back strain when I can actually stand up to pin and cut out my patterns and projects.

I wouldn't know how to function without my cutting/pressing table. Literally. I have no idea how I pressed fabric before I made that thing. I can only imagine it was ugly. (Possibly it helped that at that time, I only made clothes for toddlers.)

Congrats, your house is so cute. I an lucky enough to have a big sewing room and the thing I love is three closets along the wall with shelving in one, an outlet and my ironing board in the second, and a hanging rod in the third. I am still on the hunt for the perfect cutting tabel.

The house is super cute! And a dedicated sewing room? Yay!
It's hard to comment in terms of priorities, but the features I like best about my sewing room are: flat surfaces (a table for cutting and tracing, an ironing board, and place to set instructions, etc.), hanging shelves (take up no floor space), magazine files for all my Ottos and Burdas, long tables for all the machines (my 3 and 1 kids') with a chair for each, and good storage system - including tall skinny cupboards with shelves in them, and a cubby hole shelf. All of this has evolved, though. (And most of it's from Ikea, hehe). It's probably impossible to go out and buy the perfect setup. You gradually create what you need.

Welcome home! I think the most important thing in my sweatshop is my big farm table that I raised to a healthy height with those bed risers you get at bed, bath and beyond? That way I'm cutting without bending over, which kills my back.

Yeah for arrival! Your house is cute! I would love a cutting table at the right height.

I have shelves for my fabric, and a big table for the machines. I can always use the dining room table for cutting out (very handy since it's 12 feet long), but machine spac e is of paramount importance!

That's a nice house, reminiscent of those here in the Northeast. Hoep you're settled in soon.

Welcome to the West!! You're going to love it! Your new home is adorable - and I'll bet you'll spend some time with home dec - you guys are so quick!

BTW, we still have skiing in the Sierras. Amazing for this late in the year.

The best thing about the town I live in, too, is turning the corner and finding the mountains staring back at you. It still gives me a little shiver.

I am also in the process of setting up my sewing room, though I think I'm a bit closer than you, not having to wait for my furniture. I still haven't been able to sew this past week, though, I definitely have the itchy feeling! And it will be so exciting once you do have your room all set up. :)

My husband did built ins and if I could do it over here are something I wish I had and things that I ended up not using. He built the desk to my height (5'3") so it's nice to have the correct height. I wish I would have made the desk much longer so I could have all my machines in a row. He built a bunch of shelves on either side and accross the top. But I've found that book sheelves work best for fabric storage. He also built me a 60" by 36" table at cutting height and made three rows of cubbies underneath. You can buy ceiling tiles at hardware store and cover with batting and heavy muslin or canvas so you have a pinnable surface. He also converted the closet to all shelving since this worked better for my needs. Good luck with your sewing room. I had to wait till my five kids grew up to get mine. Lucky girl.

Oh my dream studio would obviously be something along the lines of Anna Maria Horners new space, but since that isn't happening anytime soon, I'm hoping to get of these...

Oh to have a sewing room and that is it! Dreamy! Check out Polkadot Chair: http://www.polkadotchair.com/2011/05/home-of-polkadot-chair-part-2.html. She has taken her sewing and crafting to entrepreneurship, so it is a bit elaborate. She sparked some ideas in my head...maybe will help spark some your way. I totaly want a great cutting/planning table and some cute storage bins. Congrats on your new space!

You nailed them all...a sturdy cutting table, big ironing surface and room for my machines...but storage, storage, storage should be added too!
